Most of us don’t give scissors much thought because they are just a regular part of our daily lives. Do you know when were scissors invented? The earliest scissors that we are aware of come from the Middle East and date back up to 4,000 years. They were made of two bronze blades joined at the end, across from the blade tips, by a thin, curved strip of bronze. The blades were compressed and then released, which caused them to separate.
The invention of scissors is frequently attributed to Leonardo da Vinci because he used them to cut canvas, but they existed for many centuries before his time. It’s difficult to locate a home today without at least one pair.

Ancient Scissors
As early as 1500 B.C., the Egyptians used a type of scissors. They were made of a single piece of metal, typically bronze, that had been shaped into two blades and was guided by a metal strip. The strip separated the blades up until they were compressed. Each blade was a pair of scissors. The blades were said to be scissors when used all together. The invention eventually reached locations outside of Egypt through trade and exploration.
In the year 100 AD, the Romans modified the Egyptian design., creating pivoted or cross-blade scissors that were more in line with what we have today. Although they occasionally made their scissors from iron as well, the Romans occasionally used bronze. Roman scissors had two blades that slid past one another. In order to produce a cutting effect between the two blades when they were applied to different properties, the pivot was positioned between the tip and the handles. Scissors used in both ancient Egypt and Rome required regular sharpening.
Scissors Enter The 18th Century
Robert Hinchliffe of Sheffield, England, deserves to be recognized as the creator of contemporary scissors even though it is difficult to pinpoint the original inventor of scissors. More than 200 years after da Vinci’s passing, in 1761, he became the first to manufacture and mass-produce them out of steel.
Louise Austin of Whatcom, Washington, developed and received a patent for the pinking shears in 1893.
The Impact Of Sewing Scissors
The ability to sew has allowed humans to protect themselves from the elements and exposure to hazardous elements in their environment since the first cave dwellers started to fashion animal skins into clothing. Additionally, it gave them a means of protecting their privacy or of accessorizing themselves for ceremonial purposes or to attract a mate.
Fabrics can be cut into pieces with scissors and then shaped to fit a particular need, but this process has advantages beyond just clothing. Without sewing supplies like scissors, it would be impossible to make the quilts, bedding, and mattresses we sleep on, the upholstery in our homes and cars, the window treatments we enjoy, and even the hot air balloons we admire.
Scissor Evolving & Improving
More and more people wanted to be able to own scissors as word spread about the work they could do. This prompted English businessman Robert Hinchliffe to start producing pivoting scissors in large quantities in 1761. His scissors were of high quality and were made of fine cast steel.
Even today, fine scissor makers use polished steel to create scissors that can make precise cuts through even the finest silks and the thickest leathers. Nearly every home still has at least one pair of high-quality scissors for use in sewing, crafting, and other general cutting tasks, even as technology increasingly takes over these tasks in our lives.
